Transplant Patient Expense Reimbursement Program (TPER)

Many patients waiting for heart, heart-lung or lung transplantation face financial barriers in accessing transplantation, as often patients are required to relocate to access the waitlist for transplantation, on-going assessment and follow-up care following transplant surgery. In recognition of these financial barriers, on April 20, 2009, the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care announced the launch of a fund beginning May 1, 2009 to reimburse transplant patients for limited accommodation-related expenses if the transplant hospital requires the transplant patient, specifically heart, heart-lung and lung transplant patients, to temporarily relocate to the proximity of a transplant hospital to access a life-saving transplant.

Trillium Gift of Life Network has launched the Transplant Patient Expense Reimbursement Program referred to as TPER. Patients waiting for heart, heart-lung, or lung transplantation who are required to relocate near the transplant hospital for the purposes of transplantation may now apply for reimbursement of qualified relocation accommodation expenses incurred as of May 1, 2009.

TPER is a Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care funded program that administers reimbursement of qualified relocation accommodation expenses for eligible patients as outlined in the Ministry's policy. The Ministry is responsible for the TPER policy and eligibility requirements; Trillium Gift of Life Network is administering the program on behalf of the Ministry.
