After chronic kidney failure and years of dialysis, Karen Nicole was blessed with a successful kidney transplant in 1996. The transformation from a sick person to a healthy vibrant young adult was literally instantaneous. Since her transplant, Karen Nicole has traveled extensively and continues to pursue her goals - from acting to freelance writing to entrepreneurship - seeking challenges she never would have imagined for herself.
Karen Nicole is working to make a difference in the area of organ and tissue donation advocacy, and with the Kidney Foundation of Canada. For years she has enjoyed spreading her life-altering experience as an organ recipient participating in television interviews, lectures and seminars as well as contributing to books and magazine articles. More than ever Karen Nicole realizes the profound importance of sharing her story as an example that may make a difference for someone else who is waiting for the gift of organ and/or tissue donation.
"While living with kidney failure, and doing dialysis, there were always limitations. My doctor's told me that my kidney began working on the operating table and it had to be true because I woke up in "recovery" feeling better than I had in years! After my transplant I felt limit-less -- I dashed all of the small ideas I'd had and traded them in for larger dreams. I moved forward with a new confidence not just because I felt so much better physically but also because I was given the rare opportunity to greet a new, much larger vantage point, and I'm still enjoying the view!"
