  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario is required.

The Director, Tissue Program is a newly defined role and an integral member of the clinical team.  This position is responsible for planning and managing  an integrated tissue system  including tissue donation, recovery and tissue banking. The tissue system includes the following tissue types: Ocular, Cardiovascular, Skin,  Musculoskeletal and Connective tissue. Working  with the Directors, Hospital Programs  and diverse stakeholders, this position promotes collaborative efforts to fully integrate tissue donation best practices in hospitals, with coroners and forensic pathologists, funeral home professionals and others where tissue donation can be maximized. In collaboration with Ontario tissue banks, this position ensures that recovery services are effective and planning for tissue banking services is in alignment with Ontario tissue transplant requirements. 

 This position is responsible for the TGLN staff providing telephone approach to families and coordinating recovery services in partnership with  tissue banks, hospitals and other stakeholders.    

This position requires on-call responsibilities, the availability to promptly travel within the province of Ontario, access to a car and a valid G driver’s license.

 Role Description:

  • Provide leadership in the delivery of safe and effective tissue donation and recovery services across the province;
  • Increase tissue donation rates through effective and integrated systems;
  • In partnership with Directors of Hospital Programs, responsible for ensuring efficient and effective donation services  to Ontario hospitals;
  • Ability to champion excellence in service delivery;
  • Develop and manage the business plan and departmental budget for areas of responsibility;
  • Support donation case management through sound understanding of the donation practices and successful problem solving;
  • Make recommendations and develop appropriate business cases for new programs and initiatives;
  • Prepare strategic and risk analysis to evaluate projects;
  • Maintain a solid understanding of key business metrics and drivers, to ensure that policies and procedures support both short and long term strategies; 
  • Develop and use performance metrics to drive performance forward;
  • Leads process design and continuous improvement of workflows encompassing industry best practices, participating in process design sessions and translating outcomes into process and workflow documentation;
  • Build relationships and work collaboratively to identify solutions and resolve problems with a diverse group of stakeholders including inter-professional teams in the tissue banks;
  • Ensures effective communication and coordination with an internal network of people, including: TGLN staff and leadership, medical professionals and the tissue banks;
  • Manages the performance review process, including annual review, ongoing performance evaluations, and personal development plans;
  • On-call responsibilities as defined by company policy and/or guidelines.


Qualifications:

  •  Background in organ and tissue donation or tissue banking an asset;
  • Master’s degree with at least five years of management experience or a combination of equivalent experience and education;
  • Strong clinical background and understanding required;
  • Experience working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential;
  • Reacts to project adjustments and alterations promptly and efficiently;
  • Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including senior; management, clients, stakeholders and other departments;

The Referral Triage Coordinator (RTC) provides expert, professional services in a manner consistent with the mission and values of TGLN.  S/he is passionate about organ and tissue donation.  The RTC is responsible for responding and triaging new referrals and does everything within his/her professional scope of influence to ensure that the donation experience is meaningful and positive; facilitates and coordinates many aspects of the donation process and implements order sets; works closely with the attending health care team to medically manage the patient’s physiologic status prior to brain death; uses their critical judgment skills to assess and allocate clinical resources on a daily basis. 

 The RTC ensures continuous donation support services by:

1)     Acting as an expert resource in all aspects of organ and tissue donation and provides consistent and timely support to all hospitals

2)     Promoting and supporting organ and tissue donation best practices and effective donation processes through phone support for all new and open referrals

3)     Uses critical thinking skills to allocate TGLN’s clinical resources on a daily basis

4)     Participates in daily bullet rounds

5)     Maintains concise, accurate records of data regarding organ referrals, including lab values, medications, diagnostic tests required to evaluate and manage all potential and/or actual donors

6)     Collecting and reporting data for quality management practices;

7)     Must expertly posses knowledge of medical and legal principles of donor evaluation, consent and management

8)     May interact with families by phone when resources are limited or the situation dictates

9)     Ability to respond and support all aspects of the donation process in times of high activity

10)  Approximate time allocation:

  • 80% - hospital support and education services, including implementation and evaluation of standing orders, referrals plans, and quality management  initiatives
  • 15% - follow up on open referrals
  • 10% - stakeholder relations and case related paperwork

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree; Master’s level preparation an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years critical care and/or relevant organ and tissue donation experience.
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario is required.
  • CNA Certification in Critical Care an asset.
  • Compassionate, dedicated; professional leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-directed and able to function collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Sensitive to spiritual, cultural and other relevant contexts of care.
  • Demonstrated formal and informal educational programming experience is a definite asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work collaboratively with both clinical and non-clinical stakeholders at multiple levels.
  • Excellent demonstrated communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts, including on-call shifts.
  • Ability to travel within the Hamilton, Niagara and Waterloo area.
  • A valid G driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle is required.

Trillium Gift of Life Network is an agency of the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care responsible for the coordination of organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Ontario. Our mandate includes increasing public awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation, education of health care professionals, and ensuring a safe and effective donation and transplant system in Ontario.  Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer – Transplant and Vice President - Transplant for Trillium Gift of Life Network and working closely with the Director, Provincial Resource Centre, you will promote a culture of Transplantation in Ontario. Your goals would include: to provide medical direction, provide leadership, consultation, and support to TGLN staff and hospital bedside teams in transplantation practices. You will also serve as a clinical resource to improve all aspects of transplantation in order to maximize the opportunity for potential transplantation. This role will provide consultative support, educator and leadership as required.

 

Role Description

Be a member of the on-call team to provide 24/7 on-call physician telephone support and advice for Trillium Gift of Life

  • To work with the Provincial Resource Centre, Organ and Tissue Donation Coordinator, or Manager On Call in selected cases based on identified criteria
  • Providing  medical direction to TGLN staff, transplant programs and donor hospitals
  • Using Health Canada regulations provide expert knowledge around donor  medical suitability screening and provide guidance in the assessment of risk for organs for transplant
  • Provide direction in the donation and transplantation process when conflict occurs between parties
  • Support consistent, safe, fair and equitable opportunity for transplant across the province
  • Using provincial algorithms provide guidance in situations where questions arise surrounding organ allocation
  • Assist in  maximizing organ yield and utilization
  • Make recommendations on whether delays in recovery should be supported to enhance  organ transplantation
  • Provide feedback on recommendation brought forward to support donors and to increase organs available for transplant
  • Provide expert advice and to TGLN
  • Participate in quarterly practice rounds to identify educational and improvement  opportunities
  • Assist in drafting recommendation and policies that support the mandate of TGLN
  • Provide a report to CMO on any cases that require a review

 Qualifications and Skills

 Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources

  • Strong written and oral skills
  • Well-developed influencing, negotiating, consensus and counseling skills
  • Highly developed time management skills and ability to prioritize

 Knowledge of Health Care System:

  • Understand Ontario's health care system, health care delivery program operations, community-based health care delivery models and related regulations
  • Ability to apply your knowledge when providing strategic advice and ensure that project planning and management standards meet the business needs of stakeholders
  • Issues management and strategic orientation skills to link current actions to strategies or long-term perspective

Leadership and Consultation Skills:

  • Ability to champion excellence using consultation, communication and relationship management skills
  • Provide strategic advice on issues and solutions.
